What's Happening?
Entreprise Générale du Cobalt (EGC), EVelution Energy, and Trafigura have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a long-term supply framework for Congolese cobalt hydroxide to the US. This agreement aims to support EVelution Energy's
production of up to 40% of projected US cobalt demand. EVelution Energy plans to refine the material at its Arizona site into battery-grade cobalt sulfate and alloy-grade cobalt metal for sectors such as aerospace, defense, and electric vehicle batteries. EGC will source cobalt hydroxide under its state mandate in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between EGC, EVelution Energy, and Trafigura is significant for the US cobalt supply chain, which is crucial for industries like electric vehicles and defense. By securing a reliable source of cobalt hydroxide from the DRC, the US can enhance its domestic production capabilities and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers. This agreement aligns with broader efforts to strengthen critical mineral supply chains and support the transition to renewable energy technologies. The collaboration could lead to increased investment in refining and manufacturing infrastructure in the US, boosting economic growth and technological innovation.
