TokyoPop, a publisher renowned for introducing manga to the North American market, has announced the launch of a new imprint called TokyoPop Learning. This initiative will focus on creating comics and children's books aimed at young readers aged 10 and up.
The titles will be distributed through major book retailers and educational distributors, including Penguin Random House. TokyoPop is collaborating with Gakken Inc., a prominent Japanese educational company, to develop manga resources that address learning gaps. According to a 2023 survey by the School Library Journal, graphic novels and manga have become increasingly popular in over 90% of school libraries, with 83% of librarians recommending them to struggling readers. Stu Levy, CEO and Founder of TokyoPop, emphasized the growing trend of young people engaging with manga, while Katsuhiro Takiguchi of Gakken Inc. highlighted the goal of making learning an enjoyable journey.
