What's Happening?
The Marathon County Public Library has launched its summer reading program, 'Unearth a Story,' designed to engage children and teens with activities and incentives to encourage reading during the summer months.
The program's theme is inspired by dinosaurs, paleontology, and archaeology, and it also celebrates America's 250th birthday. Running throughout the summer at all library locations, the program includes performances, craft activities, and book displays. Children can pick up activity books that contain puzzles, coloring pages, and details about the summer reading program. Teens have their own activity packets and can earn popular book titles by completing them. The program is open to all ages, with no registration required.
Why It's Important?
Summer reading programs like 'Unearth a Story' play a crucial role in preventing the 'summer slide,' where students lose some of the academic gains made during the school year. By providing engaging and educational activities, the Marathon County Public Library supports literacy development and fosters a love for reading among young participants. The program also encourages family involvement in setting reading goals, which can strengthen family bonds and promote a culture of reading at home. Additionally, the program's focus on themes like paleontology and archaeology can spark interest in science and history, broadening participants' educational experiences.
