What's Happening?
The Smithsonian's traveling exhibit, 'Spark! Places of Innovation,' is set to tour Vermont and New Hampshire, highlighting rural innovation. The exhibit will visit three communities in each state from June 2026 to March 2027. It features photographs,
interactive displays, and digital stories that showcase local leaders, challenges, and successes in innovation. The initiative is a collaboration between Vermont Humanities, New Hampshire Humanities, and the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street program, aiming to inspire local programming in the humanities, sciences, and arts.
Why It's Important?
This exhibit emphasizes the significance of innovation in rural areas, often overshadowed by urban technological advancements. By focusing on local stories of innovation, the exhibit aims to inspire community engagement and highlight the potential for growth and development in rural settings. It serves as a platform for sharing knowledge and fostering collaboration among local innovators, potentially leading to economic and cultural revitalization in these regions. The exhibit also underscores the role of humanities and arts in understanding and promoting innovation.
What's Next?
As the exhibit travels, it is expected to stimulate local discussions and initiatives related to innovation and community development. Each host community may develop complementary programs that further explore the themes presented in the exhibit. These activities could lead to increased investment in local innovation projects and partnerships with educational institutions. The exhibit's impact will likely be evaluated to inform future Smithsonian initiatives and collaborations with rural communities.
