What's Happening?
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), in collaboration with NYK Trading Corporation and Rexxam, has developed 'eco CLASPER', a car lashing belt made from 99.5% recycled polyester fiber. Installed on the
new car carrier Elder Leader, these belts reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 28.3% during production compared to conventional materials. The initiative aims to address environmental concerns associated with petroleum-derived materials used in car carriers. If implemented fleet-wide, NYK estimates a reduction of 400 tons of GHG emissions annually.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by NYK highlights the shipping industry's efforts to reduce its environmental footprint. By using recycled materials, NYK not only addresses waste management issues but also contributes to the broader goal of reducing emissions in maritime operations. This move aligns with global sustainability trends and regulatory pressures to lower carbon emissions. As one of the largest car carrier operators, NYK's adoption of eco-friendly practices could influence industry standards and encourage other companies to pursue similar initiatives.
