What's Happening?
Trey Owens, a quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Owens, originally from Cy-Fair, Texas, had an impressive junior season, throwing for 2,057 yards and 34 touchdowns
with just six interceptions. As a senior, he led his team to an 11-2 record, completing 222 of 313 passes for 3,303 yards, 43 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Despite his talent, Owens struggled to find a role in the Longhorns' depth chart, sitting as the No. 3 quarterback in 2024 and dropping to fourth in 2025. During his time at Texas, Owens appeared in only two games, completing two of four passes for 19 yards against UTSA in 2024. His decision to enter the transfer portal comes as the Longhorns continue to have a strong quarterback room led by Steve Sarkisian and A.J. Milwee, with players like Manning and Lacey expected to return and the addition of five-star recruit Dia Bell.
Why It's Important?
Owens' departure from the Texas Longhorns highlights the competitive nature of college football, where talented players often seek opportunities elsewhere due to limited playing time. This move could impact the Longhorns' quarterback depth, but it also opens up opportunities for other players in the program. For Owens, entering the transfer portal provides a chance to find a team where he can play a more significant role and potentially showcase his skills to advance to the next level. The transfer portal has become a crucial aspect of college sports, allowing athletes to navigate their careers and find the best fit for their talents and aspirations.
What's Next?
As Owens enters the transfer portal, he will likely evaluate potential schools that offer him a better chance to play and develop his skills further. Meanwhile, the Texas Longhorns will focus on their remaining quarterbacks, including Manning and Lacey, and prepare for the upcoming season with the addition of Dia Bell. The coaching staff will need to ensure that the team remains competitive and that the transition does not affect their performance in the next season. Other schools may express interest in Owens, given his impressive statistics and potential to contribute significantly to their programs.
