What's Happening?
Service NSW is transitioning its digital products from the Tanzu Application Service (TAS) to the Red Hat OpenShift platform on AWS, known as ROSA. This move is driven by the need to reduce operational costs and address legacy issues associated with TAS,
which has seen multiple ownership changes leading to increased expenses. The agency's Chief Technology Officer, Suneetha Bodduluri, announced that the migration, initially planned to take four years, has been expedited to complete by the end of next year. The transition involves moving 10 to 20 digital products per quarter, starting with the most challenging ones. The switch is funded entirely through cost savings, with the potential to reduce the agency's Platform as a Service (PaaS) bill by three-quarters.
Why It's Important?
The migration to ROSA is significant as it represents a strategic shift in how Service NSW manages its digital infrastructure, aiming to enhance capability while reducing costs. By moving away from TAS, the agency seeks to avoid the complexities and financial burdens associated with its previous platform. This decision reflects a broader trend in the public sector to leverage cloud-based solutions for greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The anticipated cost savings are substantial, potentially allowing Service NSW to operate within a quarter of its current PaaS expenses. This move could set a precedent for other government agencies facing similar challenges with legacy systems and budget constraints.
What's Next?
As Service NSW progresses with the migration, the focus will be on ensuring a smooth transition of its digital products to the new platform. The agency plans to continue migrating products in quarterly batches, with an emphasis on learning and adapting as the process unfolds. The successful completion of this migration could lead to further technological advancements and cost-saving measures within the agency. Additionally, other government entities may observe this transition closely, considering similar strategies to modernize their digital operations and reduce expenses.
