What's Happening?
Tharisa Minerals has initiated the transition from open pit to underground mining at its chrome and platinum group metals operation in South Africa's Bushveld Complex. The project, marked by an inaugural blast, is part of a strategic development to extend
the mine's life beyond the depletion of open pit resources expected in 2034. Cementation Africa has been appointed as the key development partner, responsible for early works and the main development program over the next five years. The project aims to sustain production at 5.6 million tons per annum, with potential to increase to 6.2 million tons.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant for the South African mining sector, as it represents a major shift towards sustainable mining practices and long-term resource management. The transition to underground mining is expected to secure the future of one of the country's key mining assets, providing economic stability and job opportunities. The collaboration between Tharisa and Cementation Africa underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in executing complex mining projects, which could set a precedent for similar initiatives in the region.
What's Next?
The project will move into a five-year main development and stoping contract, aiming for steady-state underground production. Cementation Africa will focus on establishing robust governance, safety systems, and operational procedures to support long-term production. The project also includes significant skills development and workforce mobilization, with training provided to support the transition to mechanized underground mining. Innovation and collaboration with OEM partners will be crucial for the project's success, potentially leading to advancements in ore handling and operational efficiency.
