What's Happening?
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is set to introduce a performance ranking system for all its institutions. This decision follows a surprise inspection by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at the ICAR-National Research Centre
for Grapes, where administrative lapses were discovered. The minister emphasized the need for agricultural research centers to focus on farmers' needs and market-oriented innovation. The new ranking system aims to enhance accountability and drive improvements across ICAR's 113 institutes.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of a performance ranking system by ICAR represents a significant step towards improving the efficiency and effectiveness of agricultural research in India. By setting benchmarks and evaluating institutions based on their performance, ICAR aims to ensure that research centers are aligned with the needs of farmers and the agricultural sector. This initiative could lead to better resource allocation, increased innovation, and enhanced support for farmers, ultimately contributing to the growth and sustainability of the agricultural industry.
