What's Happening?
Crowley has marked the first anniversary of its American Energy LNG carrier, the first U.S.-flagged vessel dedicated to transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Puerto Rico. Since its inaugural delivery in March 2025, the carrier has transported over
2 million cubic meters of LNG, enough to power approximately 1.2 million homes for a year. This operation has also contributed to a nearly 30% reduction in carbon emissions compared to diesel. The vessel has employed 90 U.S. mariners, including 16 cadets and apprentices, with a significant portion from Puerto Rico, supporting local workforce development.
Why It's Important?
The American Energy LNG carrier plays a crucial role in enhancing Puerto Rico's energy resilience and reducing its carbon footprint. By providing a steady supply of LNG, the vessel supports the island's energy needs, contributing to economic stability and environmental sustainability. The operation also strengthens the U.S. maritime workforce, offering career opportunities and training for mariners, which is vital for maintaining a skilled labor pool in the maritime industry. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
What's Next?
Crowley is expected to continue its operations, further solidifying its commitment to Puerto Rico's energy infrastructure. The ongoing partnership with global energy company Naturgy will likely expand, potentially increasing LNG deliveries and further reducing carbon emissions. The success of this operation may encourage similar initiatives, promoting the use of LNG as a cleaner energy alternative. Additionally, the focus on workforce development may lead to more training programs and job opportunities in the maritime sector, supporting economic growth in Puerto Rico.
