What's Happening?
CicadaBio has announced new preclinical data for its investigational drug CC-18, a GLP-1/ActRII fusion protein, at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions 2026. The data highlights CC-18's potential in achieving significant weight
reduction while preserving lean muscle mass. In diet-induced obesity mouse models, CC-18 demonstrated greater weight loss compared to semaglutide, with a 58% lower weight regain post-treatment. Non-human primate studies also showed sustained weight reduction and favorable body composition changes, supporting the potential for extended dosing intervals.
Why It's Important?
The development of CC-18 represents a significant advancement in obesity treatment, addressing the challenge of achieving weight loss without compromising muscle mass. This is crucial as preserving lean mass is important for metabolic health and long-term weight maintenance. The promising preclinical results suggest that CC-18 could offer a more effective and sustainable treatment option for obesity, potentially improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs associated with obesity-related conditions.
What's Next?
CicadaBio is advancing CC-18 through clinical development, with support from Lilly’s Catalyze360 initiative. The next steps involve clinical proof-of-concept activities to further validate the drug's efficacy and safety in humans. Successful clinical trials could lead to regulatory approval and commercialization, offering a new therapeutic option for obesity management. The focus will be on demonstrating the drug's benefits in preserving muscle mass and achieving high-quality weight loss.
