What's Happening?
IHG Hotels & Resorts is significantly expanding its presence in Mexico, which is its fifth-largest market globally. The company currently operates 187 hotels with 30,000 rooms in the country and has announced a development pipeline of 62 additional hotels,
adding 8,600 rooms. This expansion is part of IHG's strategy to nearly double its growth pace in Mexico over the next few years. The company has maintained a presence in Mexico for over 50 years, starting with the first Holiday Inn in Acapulco in 1970. Recent and upcoming property openings include luxury and lifestyle brands such as Kimpton Mas Olas Todos Santos and Hotel Indigo Playa del Carmen.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of IHG in Mexico underscores the country's importance as a key market in the hospitality industry. This growth is expected to boost the local economy by creating jobs and attracting more tourists. IHG's diversified brand portfolio caters to various market segments, from luxury to midscale, which can enhance Mexico's appeal as a travel destination. The development also reflects the increasing demand for hospitality services in Mexico, driven by strong regional and global travel flows. This move positions IHG to capture a larger share of the market, benefiting from its established brand recognition and loyalty programs.
What's Next?
IHG plans to open a new regional headquarters in Guadalajara, which will expand its workforce from 40 to 200 employees by the end of 2026. The company will continue to focus on expanding its Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio across Mexico, Latin America, and the Caribbean. This includes the opening of new properties in major urban centers and resort destinations. The ongoing development projects are expected to further solidify IHG's market leadership in the region and contribute to the growth of Mexico's tourism and hospitality sectors.
