What's Happening?
Spanish launch startup PLD Space has secured €180 million ($209.5 million) in a Series C funding round, bringing its total funding to over €350 million ($407.4 million). The round was led by Mitsubishi Electric and included contributions from the Spanish government
and Nazca Capital. The funding will support PLD Space's plans to increase its launch frequency and develop its commercial launch site at the Guiana Space Center. The company aims to conduct its first Miura 5 demonstration flight this year, with a second test planned by early 2027. PLD Space is also working towards semi-serial production of its Miura 5 rockets, with plans to produce four rockets this year and six next year.
Why It's Important?
The significant investment in PLD Space highlights the growing interest and competition in the commercial space launch industry. With Mitsubishi Electric's backing, PLD Space gains not only financial support but also technical expertise and access to new markets in Japan and Asia. This funding positions PLD Space to compete on a global scale, potentially increasing its market share in the satellite deployment sector. The company's focus on increasing launch frequency and production capacity aligns with the industry's demand for reliable and cost-effective launch services. As PLD Space progresses towards its goal of 30+ launches per year by the end of the decade, it could become a key player in the international space industry.
What's Next?
PLD Space plans to complete the development of its commercial launch site by July and conduct its first Miura 5 demonstration flight this year. The company aims to secure launch insurance through these demo flights, paving the way for commercial operations in 2027. PLD Space is also developing an upgraded launch vehicle, Miura Next, to meet future market demands. The company's strategic partnership with Mitsubishi Electric and its focus on scaling production could enhance its competitive edge in the global space launch market. As PLD Space continues to expand its capabilities, it may attract a broader customer base and contribute to the growth of the European space industry.
