What's Happening?
BW Epic Kosan (BWEK), a company specializing in LPG, petrochemicals, and specialty gas transportation, has expanded its partnership with GIT Coatings to enhance hull management across its fleet. This collaboration
involves the application of GIT's biocide-free graphene-based hull coating technology on selected vessels. To date, five LPG gas carriers have been coated, with one more in dry dock. The initiative follows successful results from BWEK's adoption of GIT's hard foul-release coating and proactive cleaning using robotic technology. A case study presented at HullPIC 2026 documented significant performance gains, including a 6% out-of-dock power gain, achieved through proactive hull management strategies. This approach focuses on planned inspections and early-stage slime removal, enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.
Why It's Important?
The collaboration between BWEK and GIT Coatings is significant as it addresses the growing need for sustainable practices in the maritime industry. By adopting proactive hull management, BWEK aims to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, aligning with global environmental standards. This initiative not only supports operational predictability but also meets charterparty expectations regarding fuel costs and emissions. The use of advanced coatings and cleaning technologies reflects a shift towards more sustainable maritime operations, potentially setting a precedent for other companies in the industry. The environmental benefits, coupled with cost savings from improved fuel efficiency, highlight the broader impact of this partnership on the maritime sector.
What's Next?
BWEK plans to continue scaling its proactive hull management approach, incorporating GIT's XGIT-FORCE™ coating, which offers improved antifouling performance and mechanical durability. This will support longer cleaning intervals and better resistance to reactive cleaning. The company is committed to evaluating practical solutions that enhance operational efficiency and environmental performance across its fleet. As the maritime industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, BWEK's strategies may influence other companies to adopt similar practices, potentially leading to industry-wide changes in hull management and emissions reduction.
