What's Happening?
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is urging the European Union to include the UK under the 'Made in EU' provisions of the proposed Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA). This call comes as the UK and EU navigate complex trade relations,
particularly in the automotive sector. SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes emphasized the need for a political commitment before the upcoming EU-UK summit, as the IAA's legislative process could take a year. The IAA aims to bolster European industry competitiveness against low-cost countries like China, but excluding the UK could disadvantage its automotive sector.
Why It's Important?
The inclusion of the UK in the 'Made in EU' framework is crucial for maintaining the competitiveness of the UK's automotive industry, which is deeply integrated with EU supply chains. The EU-UK automotive trade is valued at approximately €80 billion annually, making it a significant economic relationship. Excluding the UK from the IAA could lead to investment uncertainties and impact the UK's ability to compete in the electric vehicle market. The SMMT's lobbying efforts highlight the broader implications of post-Brexit trade arrangements on the UK's industrial sectors.
What's Next?
The upcoming EU-UK summit presents an opportunity for the UK to secure a political statement regarding its inclusion in the IAA. If successful, this could provide clarity and stability for the UK's automotive industry, encouraging further investment and collaboration. However, if the UK is excluded, it may need to explore alternative trade agreements or incentives to support its automotive sector. The outcome of these negotiations will likely influence future trade policies and economic strategies between the UK and EU.
