James Stewart III, a graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School, is set to return to Aurora to discuss his debut novel, 'Defiant Acts.' The novel, which draws heavily from Stewart's own experiences growing up in a biracial family in the suburbs of Chicago,
has received significant acclaim since its release. Stewart's work has been recognized as a finalist for the 2025 Foreword INDIES Award and has won a 2025 Literature Award from the Friends of American Writers. The book is a series of vignettes that explore the dynamics within his family, reflecting on themes of identity and belonging. Stewart, who is also a grant writer and co-founder of Exhibit B, a reading series and artist collective, will be speaking at Yellow Bird Books in Aurora on May 16.
