What's Happening?
DNV has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for their new independent Type B LPG cargo tank design for very large gas carriers (VLGCs). This design, intended for a 90,000-cubic-metre containment system, aims to enhance
operational safety and maintenance accessibility. The design includes advanced features such as crack propagation and fatigue analyses, alongside traditional buckling and sloshing assessments. Safety measures include a partial secondary barrier and dedicated drip trays to manage leakages. HHI's Chief Technology Officer, Hongryeul Ryu, highlighted the design's potential to offer safer and more adaptable gas carrier solutions.
Why It's Important?
The approval of HHI's Type B tank design by DNV marks a significant advancement in maritime safety and engineering. This development is crucial for the shipping industry, particularly in the transportation of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), as it addresses key safety concerns and enhances the structural reliability of gas carriers. The design's innovative features could set new standards for future VLGC constructions, potentially influencing regulatory frameworks and industry practices. This approval not only boosts HHI's reputation as a leader in shipbuilding technology but also underscores the importance of continuous innovation in maritime safety.
