Allison Belan has been appointed as the new executive director of the Book Industry Study Group (BISG), succeeding Brian O’Leary, who is retiring after a decade of leadership. Belan, who has been with Duke University Press for 22 years, will officially
join BISG on June 22. Her role at Duke involved overseeing technology operations and publishing infrastructure, as well as managing the Scholarly Publishing Collective. BISG chair Matt Kennell expressed confidence in Belan's ability to lead the organization, citing her extensive experience in supply chain, metadata, and rights management.
Why It's Important?
Belan's appointment is crucial for BISG as it continues to address challenges in the book publishing industry, particularly in areas like supply chain and digital transformation. Her experience in technology and publishing infrastructure positions her to effectively lead BISG's initiatives, including the 'Book Publishing Next' plan aimed at modernizing the supply chain. This leadership change is significant for stakeholders in the publishing industry, as BISG plays a key role in setting standards and fostering collaboration across the sector.
What's Next?
As Belan transitions into her new role, BISG members will have opportunities to engage with her and discuss the organization's future direction. The focus will likely be on implementing the 'Book Publishing Next' plan and addressing ongoing industry challenges. Belan's leadership will be pivotal in navigating the evolving landscape of book publishing, particularly as digital technologies continue to reshape the industry.
