What's Happening?
The National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) have announced the expansion of NHL STREET, an initiative aimed at making street hockey more accessible to children and families across North America. This program
is designed to foster a love for hockey by providing fun and accessible street hockey experiences. The initiative is supported by the NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund and involves collaboration with NHL clubs, schools, and community organizations. Two major events will highlight NHL STREET in the coming months: an activation at the 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York, and the NHL STREET Harbour Fest in Halifax, Nova Scotia. These events will offer participants of all ages the opportunity to engage with the sport and test their hockey skills.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of NHL STREET is significant as it aims to reduce barriers to participation in hockey, a sport often perceived as expensive and inaccessible. By integrating street hockey into schools and community programs, the NHL is working to build a broader fan base and encourage lifelong engagement with the sport. This initiative not only promotes physical activity among youth but also strengthens community ties through shared sports experiences. The program's focus on inclusivity and accessibility could lead to increased diversity within the sport, potentially transforming the demographic landscape of hockey in North America.
What's Next?
As NHL STREET continues to grow, the NHL plans to spotlight milestones and local activations throughout the year. The initiative will be showcased at major NHL events to reach new audiences and celebrate community impact. The NHL is also working with partners like YMCAs and parks and recreation associations to expand local program delivery. Future developments may include further integration into school curriculums and increased collaboration with national youth organizations to enhance the reach and effectiveness of the program.
