What's Happening?
Critical Metals has announced a $30 million program to accelerate the development of the Tanbreez heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) project in Greenland. This initiative targets one of the largest known rare earth deposits globally, with the aim of starting
ore production by late 2028 or early 2029 and exporting concentrates by the third quarter of 2029. The company is responding to increased global demand for rare earth elements driven by growth in electrification, renewable energy, and advanced technology manufacturing. The plan includes advancing exploration, infrastructure, engineering, and metallurgical processes essential for transitioning Tanbreez from exploration to development stages. A $12.5 million investment will be made in exploration by 2026, with up to 6,000 meters of drilling and resource expansion from 45 million tonnes to approximately 130 million tonnes. Additionally, $15 million will be allocated for infrastructure acquisitions in Greenland and Australia, along with advanced metallurgical testing and integrated engineering programs.
Why It's Important?
The development of the Tanbreez project is significant as it addresses the growing global demand for rare earth elements, which are crucial for various industries, including renewable energy and advanced technology manufacturing. By establishing a reliable source of HREEs for Western markets, Critical Metals is positioning itself as a key player in the rare earth supply chain. This move could potentially reduce Western dependence on rare earth imports from other regions, thereby enhancing supply chain security. The project also represents a strategic opportunity for Greenland to leverage its mineral resources for economic development. Furthermore, the involvement of international partners and financial institutions, such as the $120 million letter of interest from EXIM Bank, underscores the project's potential impact on global rare earth markets.
What's Next?
The next steps for the Tanbreez project include extensive drilling at the Hill Zone deposit, exploration in the Upper Fjord area, resource upgrades, geotechnical drilling for port development, and bulk sampling for pilot plant processing. These activities are contingent on approvals from the Greenland Government. Critical Metals plans to continue strategic discussions with partners in the US, Europe, and Saudi Arabia to establish Western supply chains for rare earth elements. The company aims to expand the resource base and prepare Tanbreez for initial production stages, with objectives set for the 2026 field program.
