Tom Michael, a former Illinois basketball player and long-time Division I athletic director, is returning to the University of Illinois as the second-highest-ranking administrative officer in the athletic department. After serving 12 years as the athletics
director at Eastern Illinois University, Michael will now work under Illini athletics director Josh Whitman. His responsibilities will include oversight of the football program, men's and women's track and field/cross country, facilities management, capital projects, and the business office. Michael's return fills a leadership void created by recent departures within the department, bringing his extensive experience and familiarity with the Illini's strengths and challenges.

This move is expected to bolster the department's competitive strategy and governance, potentially leading to improved performance across various sports programs. Michael's return is also a morale boost, given his history with the university and his passion for its athletic success.
What's Next?
Michael will begin his role on May 14, where he will immediately start working on developing and implementing strategies for the athletics program.
