What's Happening?
Monzo Business has launched a free tax tool to assist UK sole traders in preparing for the upcoming Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax rules set by HMRC. The digital bank, which supports over 800,000 business customers, aims to alleviate the administrative
burden faced by sole traders by integrating a tax tool powered by Sage’s accounting technology. This initiative comes as new research highlights that more than half of sole traders spend over two hours monthly on tax administration, equating to an average of 27 hours annually. The MTD initiative requires businesses and self-employed individuals to maintain digital records and submit updates using approved software. Monzo's tool is designed to help sole traders manage their finances by categorizing transactions and tracking income and expenses in real-time.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of Monzo's tax tool is significant as it addresses the administrative challenges faced by sole traders, who often find tax management stressful and time-consuming. With the MTD rules becoming mandatory, the tool provides a solution to ensure compliance and reduce the risk of late submissions. This development is crucial for the financial well-being of sole traders, as it helps them save time and potentially avoid penalties. By simplifying tax administration, Monzo is supporting small business owners in focusing more on their core business activities, thereby enhancing productivity and reducing stress.
What's Next?
As the MTD rules are phased in over the next few years, sole traders and landlords will need to adapt to digital tax tools. Monzo's initiative is a proactive step in this transition, and its success could influence other financial institutions to offer similar solutions. The rollout of the MTD rules will continue, with different earning brackets being captured over time, starting with those earning over £50,000 in April 2026. Businesses will need to stay informed and prepared for these changes to ensure compliance and avoid disruptions.
