What's Happening?
Anthropic has launched a new Projects feature for its Claude Cowork desktop application, designed to enhance workflow management by allowing users to create persistent workspaces. This feature enables the integration of local folders, custom instructions,
and ongoing tasks into defined projects, rather than isolated sessions. The update also incorporates scheduled tasks, which were introduced in a previous Claude app update, to improve context retention for repeated workflows and team collaboration. Claude Cowork, initially announced in January 2026 as a research preview, functions as a desktop agent for automating multi-step tasks. Users can grant folder access with read, edit, and delete permissions, and the tool supports file organization, document generation, and browser automation through Chrome extension integration.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the Projects feature in Claude Cowork represents a significant advancement in AI-driven workflow management tools. By enabling persistent workspaces, Anthropic addresses a core limitation of session-based AI tools, which is particularly beneficial for users handling repetitive tasks such as file organization or data analysis. This development positions Claude Cowork as a structured platform for both individual and team use, allowing multiple users to operate within consistent boundaries. The feature's integration of local folders and scheduled tasks enhances its utility for professional users who require automation in workflows involving local files and browser actions. The focus on high-tier subscriptions reflects its target audience of professional users who can benefit from these advanced capabilities.
What's Next?
Anthropic is developing an intermediate permission mode for Claude Code, which will balance automation and user oversight by determining when user approval is necessary. This feature aims to reduce friction while maintaining oversight, although no release date has been confirmed. Additionally, while Claude Cowork is currently available only for macOS users, Windows support is planned, which will expand its accessibility. The emphasis on connectors for services like AWS and n8n indicates Anthropic's intent to bridge local and external data sources, potentially increasing user retention among power users.
