What's Happening?
Allison Belan has been named the new executive director of the Book Industry Study Group (BISG), succeeding Brian O'Leary, who will retire on June 30th. Belan, who will officially join BISG on June 22nd, brings extensive experience from her 22-year career
at Duke University Press, where she was the Director of Strategic Innovation and Services. Her role involved overseeing technology operations and publishing infrastructure. BISG, a leading U.S.-based trade association, focuses on solving challenges in the publishing industry supply chain, including standards development and best practices. Belan's appointment is part of a transition plan already in place, as announced by BISG Board Chair Matt Kennell. O'Leary, who revitalized BISG during his 10-year tenure, will step down after being recognized for his contributions to the industry, including receiving the Frederic G. Melcher Lifetime Achievement Award from Publishers Weekly.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of Allison Belan as executive director of BISG is significant for the publishing industry as it continues to navigate challenges in the supply chain and standards development. Belan's experience in strategic innovation and her understanding of core topics such as metadata and rights management are expected to drive BISG's initiatives forward. Her leadership could enhance BISG's role in modernizing the supply chain, which is crucial for the industry's growth and profitability. The transition also marks the end of Brian O'Leary's impactful tenure, during which he restored BISG's committee structure and emphasized the importance of research and development. The continuity and fresh perspective that Belan brings could further BISG's mission to address industry challenges and foster collaboration among stakeholders.
What's Next?
As Allison Belan steps into her new role, BISG is expected to continue its focus on 'Book Publishing Next,' an initiative aimed at updating the supply chain's functionality. This project is central to BISG's strategy to enhance its value to the industry. Belan's leadership will likely involve engaging with C-suite decision-makers and other stakeholders to drive these changes. Meanwhile, Brian O'Leary plans to remain available to support the transition, ensuring a smooth handover. The industry will be watching how Belan's strategic vision and expertise influence BISG's future projects and its ability to secure resources for research and development, which O'Leary identified as a critical need.
