What's Happening?
Fifteen members of a girls water polo team successfully swam from Alcatraz Island to the Saint Francis Yacht Club, a challenging 1.5-mile swim known for its strong currents and cold waters. The team, led by biology teacher and coach Lauren Lesyna, obtained a permit and Coast Guard approval to undertake the swim as a separate event. Despite heavy fog and rough waters threatening to cancel the swim, the team began their journey at 9:20 a.m. The swimmers were supported by three boats for safety, and they had trained extensively in similar conditions to prepare for the event. The swim was inspired by the historical escape attempt from Alcatraz in 1962, and the team completed the swim in 40 to 56 minutes, greeted by cheering friends and family upon
arrival.
