What's Happening?
BMW has announced that its new i7 model will feature sixth-generation (Gen6) battery cells, which are designed to reduce the supply chain CO2 equivalent footprint by approximately 33% compared to the previous Gen5 cells. This reduction is achieved through
the use of secondary raw materials for lithium, cobalt, and nickel, as well as the exclusive use of renewable energy in the production of cells and active materials. Additionally, from 2026, selected wheel designs for the i7 will incorporate 70% secondary aluminum, with the remaining primary aluminum production partially powered by renewable energy. All components using secondary materials are said to meet the same quality standards as conventional parts. The i7 and all variants of the new 7 Series are produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, which sources 100% of its external electricity from renewable sources.
