What's Happening?
SMG has introduced the Commerce Media Network (CMN) Maturity Index, a new framework designed to assess and accelerate the development of retail and commerce media networks globally. The index reveals that 58% of networks are operating at a mid-market
level, while 28% demonstrate mature capabilities. Despite rapid growth, the industry lacks a consistent framework for assessing network sophistication. The CMN Maturity Index evaluates networks across three dimensions: the strength of a network's proposition, the value delivered to advertisers, and the organizational maturity underpinning the network. Early findings indicate that mature networks show consistent performance across all dimensions, with a significant correlation between a network's capabilities and overall maturity.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the CMN Maturity Index is significant as it provides a structured approach to evaluating commerce media networks, which are becoming increasingly important in the retail sector. As more retailers launch or expand media propositions, understanding how to build a network that stands out is crucial. The index helps networks benchmark against industry standards, identify capability gaps, and plan strategic investments. This development is likely to influence how retailers and advertisers approach media network investments, potentially leading to more strategic consolidation and competitive differentiation in the industry.
What's Next?
The CMN Maturity Index is expected to guide commerce media networks in prioritizing investments based on their unique value propositions and long-term strategies. As the industry moves from rapid expansion to strategic consolidation, networks will likely focus on enhancing their capabilities in areas such as offsite orchestration, in-store automation, and AI-enabled insights. The index will serve as a strategic development tool, helping organizations create competitive advantages and unlock sustainable growth.
