What's Happening?
Stevie Nicks, the renowned singer, has made a significant donation to the University of Southern California (USC) to help establish an endowed chair at the Keck School of Medicine. The donation is part
of a $3 million fundraising goal for the Caruso Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. This chair is dedicated to Dr. Joseph Sugerman, Nicks' personal ear, nose, and throat specialist, who has been instrumental in maintaining her vocal health throughout her career. Dr. Michael M. Johns, the director of the USC Voice Center, will be the inaugural holder of the chair. Nicks expressed her gratitude for Dr. Sugerman's support over the years and is thrilled to acknowledge his contributions to vocal medicine.
Why It's Important?
This donation highlights the intersection of arts and medicine, emphasizing the importance of specialized medical care for artists who rely on their voices for their careers. By funding this chair, Nicks is not only honoring her doctor but also contributing to the advancement of vocal health research and treatment. This could lead to improved care for performers and others who depend on their vocal abilities. The establishment of the chair at a prestigious institution like USC underscores the significance of otolaryngology in maintaining the health and careers of vocal artists.
