What's Happening?
WEG, a global manufacturer of integrated energy systems, has announced the construction of a new manufacturing plant dedicated to battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Itajaí, Santa Catarina, Brazil. This facility will be among the most advanced in the country
and represents a strategic expansion of WEG's energy transition portfolio. The project is supported by BRL 280 million in financing through the BNDES More Innovation programme, aimed at transforming strategic minerals for energy transition and decarbonisation. The plant will feature high levels of automation and a dedicated laboratory for product testing and development. Once operational, it will generate approximately 90 direct jobs and expand WEG's BESS production capacity to up to 2 GWh per year.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of this new facility is a significant step for WEG in strengthening its position in the global energy transition landscape. Battery energy storage systems are crucial for supporting grid stability, especially as renewable energy sources like solar and wind become more prevalent. By enhancing its production capacity, WEG is contributing to energy security and grid resilience. This investment aligns with WEG's strategic objective to position itself and Brazil more competitively in the energy transition sector, mitigating risks and strengthening the country's presence in this growing market. The facility's advanced capabilities will enable WEG to deliver scalable and technically robust solutions to support the global shift towards renewable energy.
What's Next?
Construction of the new plant is scheduled to begin shortly, with completion planned for the second half of 2027. WEG's investment plan includes further expansion of its product portfolio and production capacity, with additional projects in the pipeline. The company aims to continue its focus on developing high value-added solutions and strengthening its role in the energy transition. As the demand for renewable energy and energy storage solutions increases, WEG is well-positioned to capitalize on these opportunities and drive innovation in the sector.
