What's Happening?
International film distributor and production company Mubi has acquired the rights to Fernando Eimbcke's film 'Flies' ('Moscas') for distribution in Mexico and the rest of Latin America. This acquisition marks the first time Mubi will theatrically release
a Mexican film across Latin America. 'Flies' had its world premiere at the Berlinale, where it competed for the Golden Bear, and is set to open the Guadalajara Film Festival on April 17. The film, shot entirely in black and white, tells the story of a solitary woman who rents out a room in her large complex and forms a deep connection with her tenant's nine-year-old son. The film stars Teresita Sánchez, Hugo Ramírez, Enrique Arreola, and introduces young actor Bastian Escobar.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of 'Flies' by Mubi highlights the growing interest and investment in Latin American cinema by international distributors. This move could pave the way for more Latin American films to gain international exposure and theatrical releases, potentially boosting the region's film industry. For Mubi, this acquisition aligns with its strategy to expand its global reach and diversify its film offerings. The film's release could also enhance the visibility of Fernando Eimbcke, a prominent figure in Latin American cinema, and contribute to the cultural exchange between Latin America and the global film community.
What's Next?
The theatrical release of 'Flies' in Mexico and Latin America is scheduled for the second half of 2026. As the film gains traction, it may attract attention from other international markets, potentially leading to further distribution deals. The success of 'Flies' could encourage other filmmakers in the region to pursue similar distribution opportunities, fostering a more vibrant and interconnected global film industry. Additionally, Mubi's continued investment in Latin American cinema may inspire other distributors to explore the region's rich storytelling traditions.
