What's Happening?
The Democrat and Chronicle is hosting a poll to determine the Faber Builders Girls Sports Athlete of the Week for December 22-28. The nominees, selected by sports reporters, include standout performers from Section V girls wrestling teams. Among the candidates are Lorilyle Beardsley, an eighth-grader from Avon-Geneseo who won the 94-pound weight class at the Midlakes Frosty's Freestyle Festival Tournament, and Jasmine Brucato, a junior from Alexander who secured the 107-pound weight class. Other nominees include Alivia Cartwright, a senior from Fillmore/Keshequa, Mackenzie Miesch, a freshman from Brockport, and Peyton Mullin, a junior from Dundee. The poll is open until 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the winner to be announced on Instagram Friday morning.
Why It's Important?
This event highlights the growing recognition and support for girls' wrestling in high school sports, a field traditionally dominated by boys. By spotlighting these athletes, the Democrat and Chronicle not only promotes gender equality in sports but also encourages young female athletes to pursue wrestling. The competition provides a platform for these athletes to gain visibility and recognition for their achievements, potentially inspiring more girls to participate in wrestling. This could lead to increased investment in girls' sports programs and further development of female wrestling teams across the region.
What's Next?
As the poll concludes, the winner will be announced on the Democrat and Chronicle's Instagram page, providing the selected athlete with additional exposure. This recognition could lead to further opportunities for the athletes, such as college scholarships or invitations to larger competitions. The continued success and visibility of these athletes may encourage schools to expand their girls' wrestling programs, fostering a more inclusive environment for female athletes.
