What's Happening?
The National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) have announced a $2.5 million grant to the Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens. This grant is intended to support the construction of a new Clubhouse in Astoria,
Queens, which will serve as a safe and inclusive space for local youth and families. The funding comes from the NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund (IGF) and reflects the organizations' commitment to community engagement and youth development. The new facility will provide critical programming, mentorship, and resources aimed at empowering young people and fostering positive outcomes in the community. The Clubhouse will also feature a dedicated hockey space and provide equipment to support youth-focused programming.
Why It's Important?
This grant represents the largest non-governmental financial contribution to the Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens, highlighting the NHL and NHLPA's dedication to social impact beyond the sport. By investing in community infrastructure, the NHL aims to create lasting legacies in the neighborhoods that support the game. The new Clubhouse is expected to serve over 16,000 youth annually, providing them with opportunities to explore their passions and build a foundation for their future. This initiative underscores the importance of sports as a tool for community development and youth empowerment, potentially inspiring other organizations to invest in similar projects.
What's Next?
Construction of the new Clubhouse is anticipated to begin later in 2026, following final approvals. The project is expected to enhance the Variety Boys & Girls Club's ability to deliver services and create a modern environment for youth development. As the project progresses, it may attract further support and partnerships from other community organizations and stakeholders. The NHL and NHLPA will likely continue to monitor and support the development of the Clubhouse, ensuring it meets its goals of providing a safe and inspiring space for the youth of Queens.
