What's Happening?
Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) and OMS Group have signed a contract with Intra-Asia Marine Networks (I-AM NW) to supply and install the Intra-Asia Marine (I-AM) Cable system. This subsea cable will connect Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore, with plans for additional connectivity to Korea, the Philippines, and Taiwan. The cable system will utilize advanced technologies like wavelength selective switch (WSS) and space division multiplexing (SDM) to support up to 16 fiber pairs per cable, offering an initial capacity of approximately 320 Tbps. The project is expected to be completed by early fiscal year 2029.
Why It's Important?
The development of the I-AM Cable system is a significant step in enhancing connectivity between key Asian markets. This infrastructure will
support the growing demand for high-speed internet and data services in the region, facilitating economic growth and digital transformation. By improving connectivity, the cable system will enable businesses to expand their operations and access new markets, while also supporting technological advancements and innovation. The project reflects the increasing importance of robust digital infrastructure in driving regional development.
What's Next?
As the I-AM Cable system progresses, stakeholders will focus on ensuring timely completion and addressing any technical challenges that may arise. The successful implementation of this project could lead to further investments in subsea cable systems, enhancing global connectivity. Additionally, the increased capacity and speed provided by the cable system may spur new business opportunities and collaborations across the region. Monitoring the project's impact on regional connectivity and economic growth will be essential to understanding its long-term benefits.
