What's Happening?
Austin FC has announced the acquisition of Uruguayan winger Facundo Torres from Brazilian club Palmeiras for a reported $9.5 million transfer fee. Torres, who previously played for Orlando City SC in Major
League Soccer (MLS), is known for his impressive goal-scoring record. During his time with Orlando City from 2022 to 2024, Torres scored 47 goals and provided 25 assists in 123 games. His move to Palmeiras in January 2025 saw him make 61 appearances, although his goal contributions decreased. Torres is expected to replace former Austin FC designated player Osman Bukari, who was transferred to Polish club Widzew Łódź. The 25-year-old's contract with Austin FC is guaranteed through the 2029-30 season, with an option for 2030-31. Torres, who holds a U.S. Permanent Resident Green Card, will not occupy an international roster spot.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of Facundo Torres is a significant move for Austin FC as it aims to strengthen its attacking lineup. Torres' proven track record in MLS and his experience on the international stage with the Uruguayan national team make him a valuable addition. His presence is expected to enhance Austin FC's offensive capabilities, potentially leading to better performance in the upcoming season. The move also reflects Austin FC's strategy of investing in high-profile players to compete at a higher level in the league. This acquisition could impact the team's dynamics, as Torres joins other designated players Myrto Uzuni and Brandon Vázquez, forming a potentially formidable attacking trio.
What's Next?
Facundo Torres will join Austin FC's preseason preparations as the team gears up for the 2026 season, which begins on February 21 against Minnesota United at Q2 Stadium. The club will focus on integrating Torres into the squad and ensuring he adapts to the team's playing style. Austin FC will also monitor the recovery of Brandon Vázquez from knee surgery and the performance of Myrto Uzuni, who is looking to improve after a challenging debut season. The club's management and coaching staff will work to maximize the potential of their new attacking lineup, aiming for a successful season.
