What's Happening?
Kotak Mahindra Bank's National Energy Saving Mission (KISEM) has completed over 509 energy audits across 30 industrial sectors in India, resulting in significant cost savings and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Launched in 2022 as a CSR initiative,
the program has saved Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) INR 96 crore annually and reduced CO2 emissions by over 123,594 metric tonnes. The initiative, which now spans ten IIT centers, aims to enhance energy efficiency and decarbonization in the industrial sector. The program's expansion aligns with India's broader industrial decarbonization goals, supported by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency's ADEETIE scheme.
Why It's Important?
KISEM's achievements underscore the critical role of energy efficiency in India's industrial sector, particularly for MSMEs, which form the backbone of the economy. By reducing energy costs and emissions, the program not only supports environmental sustainability but also enhances the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises. The initiative reflects a growing trend towards corporate responsibility and sustainable development, with potential long-term benefits for India's economic and environmental landscape. The program's success could serve as a model for similar initiatives globally, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts between corporations, academia, and government agencies.
