What's Happening?
Skylo, a satellite service provider, is seeking approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to expand its direct-to-device (D2D) services in the U.S. The company aims to increase the number
of devices it can serve from 1.1 million, 1.18 million, and 6.3 million units to 10 million, 10 million, and 50 million units, respectively. This expansion is driven by growing demand for satellite IoT and smartphone connectivity. Skylo's services are currently offered through partnerships with major U.S. carriers like Verizon, Spectrum Mobile, and Xfinity Mobile, and the company is also conducting trials with another unnamed U.S. mobile operator.
Why It's Important?
Skylo's expansion reflects the increasing demand for satellite-based connectivity solutions in the U.S., particularly in rural and underserved areas. By enhancing its capacity, Skylo aims to support a wider range of IoT applications, such as cattle tracking, which can benefit industries reliant on remote monitoring. The move also highlights the growing importance of satellite networks in complementing terrestrial mobile services, offering broader coverage and reliability. This expansion could drive innovation in IoT and connectivity solutions, impacting various sectors including agriculture, logistics, and emergency services.
