What's Happening?
The American Petroleum Institute (API) is set to launch new heavy-duty lubricant performance categories, API CL-4 and API FB-4, in January 2027. These new standards are designed to meet modern engine hardware needs and will replace the existing API CK-4
and API FA-4 categories. The development of these oils began in response to new emissions standards announced in 2022, which aim for a 75% reduction in nitrous oxide emissions and a 50% reduction in particulate matter by 2027. The new oils promise improved performance in areas such as piston deposits, oil consumption, and fuel economy, while also extending oil drain intervals and enhancing engine protection.
