What's Happening?
A new study published in Physiology & Behavior has explored the reasons behind cats often leaving their meals unfinished. Led by Professor Masao Miyazaki from Iwate University, the research found that the scent of food plays a significant role in a cat's
desire to eat. The study involved observing 12 mixed-breed cats and noted that their appetite declined when exposed to the same food repeatedly, but was restored with the introduction of a new scent.
Why It's Important?
Understanding feline eating habits can improve pet care and nutrition, especially for cats with health issues affecting their appetite. The study's findings suggest that olfactory stimulation can be used to enhance feeding motivation in cats, potentially benefiting those with conditions like kidney disease or cancer. This research opens up possibilities for developing better dietary strategies for cats.
