What's Happening?
PepsiCo has announced a partnership with Fertiberia to supply green hydrogen-based fertilisers across 400,000 acres of European farmland. This initiative aims to create sustainable ingredients for PepsiCo's snack brands like Lay's, Doritos, and Cheetos.
The collaboration will involve more than 1,500 farmers and is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 63% compared to traditional fertilisers. The programme builds on successful trials in Spain and Portugal and will initially launch in several European countries, with plans for further expansion.
Why It's Important?
This partnership represents a significant step towards sustainable agriculture and reducing the carbon footprint of food production. By using green hydrogen in fertiliser production, PepsiCo is addressing the environmental impact of conventional fertilisers, which contribute significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative aligns with PepsiCo's broader sustainability goals, including reducing Scope 3 emissions and promoting regenerative agricultural practices. It also sets a precedent for other companies in the food industry to adopt similar sustainable practices.
What's Next?
PepsiCo plans to expand the use of green hydrogen fertilisers to additional European countries as farmer adoption increases. The company aims to integrate these sustainable practices into its supply chain, potentially reaching 50% low-carbon fertiliser use by 2030. This initiative could influence other major food companies to explore similar partnerships and technologies, accelerating the transition to sustainable agriculture on a global scale.
