Penguin Random House (PRH) and We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) have announced the winners of the 2026 Creative Writing Awards, which include the first-ever Chinua Achebe Award for Freedom of Expression. This award honors the late Nigerian author and is aimed
at high school seniors attending public schools in the U.S., including the District of Columbia and U.S. territories, who plan to attend college in the fall of 2026. The award recognizes original compositions by these students. Nwando Achebe, speaking on behalf of the Achebe family, expressed admiration for the emotional honesty and literary sophistication of the young writers. Over 1,000 students from more than 900 high schools across 50 states and three territories participated in the competition. PRH will distribute $60,000 in scholarship awards to six high school seniors, with each receiving $10,000. The awards include categories such as the Amanda Gorman Award for Poetry and the Maya Angelou Award for Spoken Word.
