What's Happening?
Comedy streaming service Dropout has announced its first-ever licensing deal to stream the British comedy series 'Don't Hug Me I'm Scared.' This marks a significant step for Dropout, formerly known as CollegeHumor, as it expands its content offerings
through a three-year non-exclusive syndication agreement. The series, created by Becky Sloan and Joseph Pelling, will initially feature its web series version on Dropout, with biweekly releases of the longer TV series version starting March 20. 'Don't Hug Me I'm Scared' is a unique comedy puppet show that combines unsettling themes with humor, drawing comparisons to 'The Muppet Show' and 'Twin Peaks.' The series has gained a substantial following since its inception as a YouTube phenomenon, amassing over a quarter of a billion views. Produced by Blink Industries, the show is currently available on Channel 4 in the UK.
Why It's Important?
This licensing deal is a strategic move for Dropout as it seeks to diversify its content library and attract a broader audience. By acquiring a popular and unconventional series like 'Don't Hug Me I'm Scared,' Dropout positions itself as a platform for unique and innovative content, potentially increasing its subscriber base. The deal also highlights the growing trend of streaming services seeking exclusive content to differentiate themselves in a competitive market. For the creators, Sloan and Pelling, this agreement provides an opportunity to reach a wider audience and further establish their series in the international market.
