What's Happening?
Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) is set to begin its second season on June 9, 2026, with a significant expansion in media coverage. The league will feature more than 90 games broadcasted across various national and international platforms, marking
the most comprehensive media coverage in professional softball history. This season, games will be aired on ESPN platforms, including ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and for the first time, ESPN Deportes. New partnerships with CBS Sports and MLB Network will also enhance the league's visibility. Last year, the league's media distribution was primarily through regional sports networks and digital channels, with only 38 games receiving national coverage. This year, the national reach has expanded significantly, allowing a broader audience to access professional softball games.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of AUSL's broadcast reach is a pivotal development for professional softball, as it increases the sport's visibility and accessibility. By partnering with major networks like ESPN and CBS Sports, the league is poised to attract a larger audience, which could lead to increased interest and participation in softball across the United States. The inclusion of ESPN Deportes is particularly significant, as it opens up the sport to Spanish-speaking audiences, potentially inspiring a new generation of Latino youth to engage with softball. This move aligns with broader trends in sports media, where representation and accessibility are becoming increasingly important. The league's growth in viewership, with an 88% increase on ESPN platforms and a 148% increase overall from 2024 to 2025, indicates a promising future for professional softball.
What's Next?
As AUSL continues to expand its fan base and increase access to softball, the league will likely focus on further growing its viewership and engagement. The increased number of televised games, a 26% rise from the previous year, suggests that the league is committed to reaching more households across the country. The partnership with ESPN Deportes is expected to play a crucial role in capturing and inspiring new softball fans, particularly among Latino communities. The league's efforts to enhance visibility and representation could lead to more young girls, especially Latinas, participating in sports, thereby fostering a more diverse and inclusive sports environment.
