What's Happening?
Ivanhoe Electric is set to acquire a Crossover XRE Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and a material handling system from the Robbins Company to enhance mine access development at its Santa Cruz Copper Project in Arizona. The acquisition, expected to be finalized
by May 2026, aims to improve efficiency and safety during the project's decline development phase. The TBM, previously used in Australia, will undergo refurbishment and is expected to arrive in early 2027. Ivanhoe Electric plans to begin decline development in Q3 2027, with copper cathode production anticipated by Q2 2029.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of the TBM represents a significant investment in the future of copper mining in Arizona, a key region for US copper production. By enhancing efficiency and safety, Ivanhoe Electric aims to position itself as a leading copper producer, potentially impacting the US copper supply chain. The project could create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the region. Additionally, the use of advanced technology in mining operations may set a precedent for future projects, emphasizing the importance of innovation in the industry.
What's Next?
Ivanhoe Electric plans to commence major surface infrastructure construction from Q3 2027 through 2028, with copper production starting in 2029. The company is advancing its project financing process with the Export-Import Bank of the US and engaging with commercial banks and non-debt funding sources. The successful implementation of the TBM could lead to further expansions at the Santa Cruz Copper Project, including the nearby Texaco Deposit, potentially increasing the project's output and economic impact.
