What's Happening?
The British Academy Film Awards, set to take place on February 22 at London's Royal Festival Hall, will award winners with the iconic bronze mask trophies. These trophies, weighing 3 kilograms each, are crafted by the AATi Foundry in Braintree, England. The foundry produces approximately 350 bronze trophies annually for various BAFTA ceremonies, including film, television, and gaming. The creation process involves a sandcasting technique, where molten bronze is poured into sand molds to form the masks. After cooling, the masks undergo fettling, threading, and polishing to achieve their final shiny appearance. The foundry's director, Hugh Bisset, emphasizes the importance of ensuring the masks are free of polish smudges to prevent staining the winners'
attire.
