What's Happening?
The inaugural Zig Zag Festival, described as a 'visual bridge between Italy and the U.S.,' is set to take place in New York City from June 8 to June 12. This five-day event will focus on illustration and comics, bringing together Italian and American
authors, artists, and publishing professionals to promote cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration. The festival is curated by Hamelin Associazione Culturale in Bologna and Brooklyn-based author-illustrator Steven Guarnaccia, in partnership with the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and other organizations such as the Society of Illustrators and Rizzoli Bookstore. The festival will feature a series of roundtables, exhibits, and a female-driven business-to-business component titled 'Bridging Markets: Women in Children’s Publishing from Italy and North America.' This initiative will include speed meetings between Italian and North American publishers, facilitated by the Italian Trade Agency.
Why It's Important?
The Zig Zag Festival represents a significant effort to strengthen cultural and professional ties between Italy and the United States, particularly in the field of children's literature and illustration. By fostering collaboration and dialogue, the festival aims to create new opportunities for artists and publishers from both countries. This initiative is particularly timely as it addresses the growing need for international cooperation in the arts and publishing sectors. The festival's focus on female-driven business initiatives also highlights the importance of gender equality and empowerment in the industry. The event could lead to increased visibility and market access for participating publishers and artists, potentially influencing trends and practices in the global publishing industry.
What's Next?
Following the festival, participants and organizers may explore further collaborations and projects that build on the connections made during the event. The success of the festival could inspire similar initiatives in other cultural sectors, promoting broader international cooperation. Stakeholders in the publishing industry, including authors, illustrators, and publishers, may seek to capitalize on the momentum generated by the festival to expand their networks and explore new markets. Additionally, the festival's outcomes could influence future programming and partnerships at major book fairs and cultural events worldwide.
