Rivian Automotive has announced the development of its first custom computer chip for self-driving vehicles, marking a shift from using Nvidia's processors. This announcement was made during Rivian's inaugural Autonomy and AI Day. The new chip, named the Rivian Autonomy Processor, is designed to enhance the vehicle's ability to process data from cameras, LIDAR, and other sensors, which is crucial for achieving higher levels of autonomous driving. Alongside this, Rivian introduced a new driver-assistance package called Autonomy+, priced at $2,500 upfront or $49.99 per month. This package includes a Universal Hands-Free feature that operates on over 3.5 million miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada. Rivian's goal is to reach Level 4 autonomy,
where vehicles can operate without human input under certain conditions. The company also plans to integrate LIDAR sensors into its next-generation R2 models to improve obstacle and road condition detection.
