What's Happening?
Fleury Michon Group, a French agri-food company, is set to open its first U.S. production plant through its division MarfoFMA. The company is investing over $37 million to convert a former White Castle distribution site in South Covington, Kentucky, into
a facility that will produce frozen meals for airline clients. This strategic move is expected to create 78 full-time jobs. Fleury Michon, founded in 1905, expanded into the airline catering business by acquiring Quebec-based FMA in 2006 and Netherlands-based Marfo in 2019, merging them into MarfoFMA. The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority has preliminarily approved a ten-year incentive package under the Kentucky Business Investment program, potentially offering up to $1.5 million in tax incentives. Additionally, up to $200,000 in tax incentives may be available through the Kentucky Enterprise Initiative Act.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of Fleury Michon's first U.S. factory marks a significant expansion of its operations in North America, enhancing its capacity to serve airline clients across the continent. This move underscores Kentucky's appeal as a destination for international business investments, as highlighted by Governor Andy Beshear. The investment not only promises job creation but also strengthens the state's economic momentum. For Fleury Michon, this development is a crucial step in solidifying its position as a major player in the airline catering industry, leveraging its expertise and resources to meet growing demand in the U.S. market.
What's Next?
The next steps involve completing the plant's construction and commencing production, although specific timelines have not been confirmed. MarfoFMA plans to train local teams in Covington to ensure the long-term establishment of its operational know-how. The success of this venture could lead to further expansions or investments in the U.S. market. Stakeholders, including local government and business communities, will likely monitor the project's progress and its impact on the local economy.
