What's Happening?
Turner Construction has introduced SafeT Coach, an AI-powered tool designed to enhance safety on construction sites. This tool is accessible from any mobile device and is available free of charge to any company. SafeT Coach provides responses to safety questions
based on Turner’s Environmental Health & Safety standards, rather than generic internet sources. The tool aims to facilitate real-time discussions about safer work practices, focusing on learning and improvement rather than enforcement. Developed through collaboration with over 80 stakeholders and validated through field pilots, SafeT Coach has already logged over 25,000 interactions. It offers features such as decision flow charts and start-of-day permit checklists, which have been used effectively by Turner staff to make informed safety decisions quickly.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of SafeT Coach represents a significant advancement in construction site safety management. By providing a tool that is both accessible and grounded in specific safety standards, Turner Construction is setting a new benchmark for industry safety practices. This tool not only saves time by reducing the need for extensive research but also empowers supervisors and craft professionals to engage in meaningful safety discussions. The widespread availability of SafeT Coach could lead to improved safety outcomes across the construction industry, potentially reducing accidents and enhancing overall site safety culture. Companies adopting this tool may see a decrease in safety-related incidents, which can lead to lower insurance costs and improved project timelines.
What's Next?
As SafeT Coach becomes more widely adopted, it is likely that Turner Construction will continue to refine and expand its capabilities based on user feedback and evolving safety standards. Other construction firms may follow suit, developing similar tools to enhance their safety protocols. The success of SafeT Coach could also prompt regulatory bodies to consider integrating AI-powered tools into safety compliance frameworks. Additionally, Turner Construction may explore partnerships with other industries to adapt the tool for broader applications, further enhancing its impact on workplace safety.
