What's Happening?
The National Book Foundation has revealed its 2026 5 Under 35 honorees, recognizing five emerging fiction writers under the age of 35. This year's honorees include Megan Kamalei Kakimoto, author of 'Every Drop Is a Man’s Nightmare'; Anika Jade Levy, author of 'Flat
Earth'; Carrie R. Moore, author of 'Make Your Way Home'; Maggie Su, author of 'Blob'; and Stephanie Wambugu, author of 'Lonely Crowds'. These writers were selected by a panel of previous National Book Foundation honorees, including Kaveh Akbar and Danielle Evans. The 5 Under 35 prize is a key part of the Foundation's mission to celebrate outstanding literature published in the United States and to connect books with readers of all ages. The honorees will be celebrated at a ceremony on June 9 at Littlefield in Brooklyn, hosted by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah.
Why It's Important?
The 5 Under 35 award highlights the importance of nurturing new literary talent and underscores the National Book Foundation's commitment to promoting diverse voices in literature. By recognizing these young authors, the Foundation not only boosts their careers but also enriches the literary landscape with fresh perspectives and innovative storytelling. This recognition can significantly impact the authors' visibility and opportunities within the publishing industry, potentially leading to increased book sales and further literary accolades. The award also serves to inspire other young writers, demonstrating that their voices and stories are valued and can achieve national recognition.
What's Next?
The honorees will be celebrated at an upcoming ceremony, which will provide them with a platform to reach a broader audience and engage with the literary community. This event may also open doors for future collaborations and publishing deals. As these authors gain more exposure, they may influence literary trends and contribute to ongoing discussions about diversity and representation in literature. The recognition could also lead to invitations to literary festivals, speaking engagements, and other opportunities to share their work with a wider audience.
