What's Happening?
The Digital Medicine Society (DiMe) has initiated a new project titled 'Scaling Trusted, High-Impact AI Care Navigation' aimed at improving the adoption of AI tools in healthcare. This initiative, supported
by Intel and a coalition of tech and healthcare leaders, seeks to develop open-access resources to ensure AI-enabled care is patient-centered, equitable, and based on real-world evidence. The project addresses the challenges patients face in navigating the healthcare system, such as delays in booking appointments, fragmented provider transitions, and complex insurance requirements. These issues often lead patients to rely on AI tools, which are not yet fully optimized, posing a risk of innovation outpacing inclusion and accountability.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it aims to address the growing reliance on AI tools by patients to manage their healthcare needs. By focusing on creating a shared infrastructure of evidence and defining standards for AI-enabled care journeys, the project seeks to ensure clinical safety and real-world impact. The effort aligns with recent calls from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) for interoperable, patient-centered tools and robust AI governance. The project will focus on operationalizing trust in AI care navigation by defining what constitutes effective AI-enabled care. It will build on existing resources like 'The Playbook: Implementing AI in Healthcare,' developed with Google for Health.
